The Mid Hudson Valley FCU was originally founded in 1963 as the IBM Kingston Employees Federal Credit Union. In 2002, MHVFCU became a community credit union, which means that anyone who lives, works, goes to school, or performs volunteer work in Dutchess, Orange County, or Ulster may join, along with local businesses. MHVFCU is owned by its 58,000 members, has over $700 million in assets, and is not-for-profit. The credit union has eleven branches, which are located in Highland, Kingston, Middletown, Newburgh, Port Ewen, Poughkeepsie, Red Hook, Rhinebeck, and Saugerties.

If you are unfamiliar with a credit union, there are a few similarities and differences that you need to know. First, the similarities – you can find all of the same financial products at a place like Mid Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union that you can find at a regular bank, and sometimes you can find even more. You will also be able to access your account and pay bills online.

As for differences, the biggest is that banks are run for profit while MHVFCU is not. One benefit is that this gives credit unions more flexibility in approving loans. For example, we have often seen cases where a mortgage lender or bank could not approve a mortgage loan, only for the consumer to turn to a credit union that was willing to approve it. Credit unions are also far more tied to the local community, which also leads to more personalized service.
