Established in 1985, Manhattan Mortgage was a mortgage broker headquartered in New York City, New York. At its peak, the company originated over $3.5 billion in mortgage loans per year and was recognized as the #1 residential mortgage brokerage in metropolitan New York. Melissa Cohn, owner and President, who founded the company and built it into a multi-billion dollar enterprise, was named Top Mortgage Originator for the 10 years in a row by the editors of "Mortgage Originator Magazine". She is also the recipient of the Ernst & Young 2003 Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Financial Services category in the New York Metro Area.
In October 2012, Manhattan Mortgage merged with Guaranteed Rate, a mortgage banker, as the market grew increasingly difficult for mortgage brokers. Manhattan Mortgage brought with it 60 employees and eight offices – two located in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn, and the rest located in Croton-on-Hudson, Southampton, East Hampton, Washington Depot, and Hopewell Jackson. Guaranteed Rate, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, is one of the largest mortgage bankers in the country. In 2012, the company was the 8th largest non-bank mortgage lender in America and originated over $14 billion in mortgages.
