Symetra Life Insurance is based out of the state of Washington and began operations in 1957. Its website boasts of its 50 years of experience in the industry. Ten years later, the company's assets passed the $1 billion mark for the first time and grew ten times bigger by 1995. In 2004, it became an independent company known as Symetra Financial Corporation. However, it was only until 2010 that Symetra first placed itself on the open stock market exchange with a company stock release. It trades on the NYSE under the symbol SYA. Today, Symetra operates with a base of $20 billion in assets, but the company's major holding is now an external consortium made up of Berkshire Hathaway (i.e. Warren Buffet) and Mountains Insurance Group.
Today, Symetra has over $29 billion in assets and 1.7 million clients in the United States. As of this writing, the company maintains a A ("Excellent") rating from A.M. Best, an A ("strong) rating from Standard & Poors, an A3 ("Good") rating from Moody's, and an A+ ("strong") from Fitch.
