The company was well known for its direct-to-consumer advertising via radio, television, mail and the internet, although American Equity also had nearly 20 brick & mortar locations. Licensed in 25 states, AEM offered home equity loans, mortgage loans for home purchase, refinance loans and Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) loans. American Equity Mortgage was founded by Deanna Daughhetee, the current President & CEO, in 1992. Since then, AEM had grown into one of the top mortgage bankers in the United States, with licensing to originate home loans in Alabama; Florida; Georgia; Illinois; Indiana; Kansas; Kentucky; Maine; Maryland; Massachusetts; Minnesota; Missouri; New Hampshire; New York; North Carolina; Ohio; Oklahoma; Oregon; Pennsylvania; South Carolina; Tennessee; Utah; Virginia; Washington; and Wisconsin. While not quite a national footprint, American Equity could lend to a large percentage of the US population.
